The Abbey of Saint-Maurice d'Agaune, founded over the tomb of the martyr Maurice in the late fourth century, is among the oldest continuously inhabited monastic sites in the Western world. The Theban Legion massacre that gave the site its origin story — Roman soldiers executed around 286 AD for refusing to persecute Christian civilians — remains historically debated but was taken as established fact throughout medieval Europe, drawing pilgrims for over a millennium.
Switzerland's commemorative franc series has consistently drawn on Romandy's ecclesiastical history for subject matter. The abbey holds one of the finest early medieval treasury collections still intact on its original site.
