The Democratic Republic of Congo issued this piece as part of the wave of FIFA World Cup commemoratives that flooded the market ahead of Germany 2006 — a tournament the DRC had no qualification involvement in whatsoever. Such issues were produced almost entirely for the collector and bullion novelty market, not for domestic circulation, and the Banque Centrale du Congo was hardly alone in this practice among African central banks during the mid-2000s commemorative boom.
