Obverse description Central device depicts the coat of arms of the Republic of Rwanda, featuring a shield charged with a sun, crossed hoe and bow, and a kob antelope head, flanked by two national flags on staffs and surmounted by a displayed eagle. The motto scroll beneath the shield bears the legend LIBERTÉ · COOPÉRATION · PROGRÈS, while the inscription RÉPUBLIQUE RWANDAISE appears across the upper portion of the shield. The large numeral '20' dominates the upper field, flanked by the French words 'VINGT' to the left and 'FRANCS' to the right in bold relief. A decorative zigzag border runs along the inner edge of the coin.

Reverse description A large, naturalistic bunch of bananas with broad tropical leaves radiates from the center of the field, rendered in fine detail. The circular legend BANQUE · NATIONALE · DU · RWANDA · is arranged around the periphery, with the date 1977 appearing at the top between two raised dots. The design emphasizes Rwanda's agricultural heritage, with the banana plant filling nearly the entire flan in an asymmetric, organic composition. A reeded edge frames the reverse.
