The Caisse Centrale de la France d'Outre-Mer was established by de Gaulle's Free French administration in 1941 specifically to provide currency for liberated and Allied-occupied French territories — a direct counter to Vichy-issued money. This 1944 note was part of the series commissioned for use across France's overseas possessions as Allied forces pushed through North and West Africa.
Edmund Dulac, the Franco-British illustrator best known for his Orientalist book illustrations, contributed designs to several wartime Allied currency projects — an unusual crossover between commercial art and emergency monetary printing. Bradbury Wilkinson, already deep in wartime security printing contracts, produced the series out of their Surrey works.
