Additional information

Deák Ferenc, the 19th-century statesman credited with negotiating the Ausgleich of 1867 that created the Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy, was placed on this circulation issue as part of Hungary's broader post-communist effort to rehabilitate liberal nationalist figures long suppressed under Soviet-era historiography. The choice was deliberate — Deák had spent the 1850s in passive political resistance against Habsburg absolutism, famously refusing any collaboration with the regime until constitutional compromise became possible on Hungarian terms.

The type entered circulation well before Hungary's 2004 EU accession, after which domestic coin designs took on added political significance amid debates over eventual euro adoption.
