Teller training notes — sometimes called "Schulungsscheine" in the German banking sector — were produced to allow cashiers to practice handling, counting, and authenticating notes without using legal tender. The ECB never officially issued these through normal channels; they were distributed internally to eurozone financial institutions ahead of the 2002 cash changeover, one of the largest simultaneous currency introductions in history, covering twelve countries on a single day.

Paper composition rather than the cotton-linen substrate of genuine euro notes is the immediate giveaway. Collectors should verify that "SPECIMEN" or equivalent cancellation text is present, as some examples have had markings removed.
