Reverse description The reverse presents a large, elliptical wood-grain or fingerprint-like pattern occupying the left portion of the field, rendered in finely incised concentric lines evoking Wirkkala's iconic Finlandia plywood relief designs. To the right stands a stylized bird perched atop a rocky outcrop, its elongated beak and simplified silhouette characteristic of Wirkkala's modernist sculptural aesthetic. The legend 'TAPIO WIRKKALA' is inscribed in spaced capital letters along the upper arc of the rim, commemorating the renowned Finnish designer and artist.

Additional information

Tapio Wirkkala was arguably the most internationally recognized Finnish designer of the twentieth century, with work spanning glassware for Iittala, banknote design for the Bank of Finland, and the iconic Finlandia vodka bottle. The Mint of Finland has issued a series of commemorative coins honoring Finnish design pioneers, and Wirkkala's inclusion was never in doubt.

He also designed Finnish coins directly — his fingerprints are on the markka series that circulated for decades before euro adoption in 2002.
