Additional information

The Normandie holds a particular place in transatlantic history — launched at Saint-Nazaire in 1932, she held the Blue Riband for fastest Atlantic crossing and was widely considered the supreme achievement of French industrial and artistic ambition of the interwar period. Her end was inglorious: requisitioned by the United States after the fall of France, she caught fire at Pier 88 in New York in February 1942 while being converted to a troopship, capsized from firefighting water, and was scrapped in 1946.

The Monnaie de Paris issued this piece as part of a broader commemorative series honoring French maritime heritage.
