Additional information

The Messageries Maritimes was a French state-subsidized shipping company that operated mail and passenger routes across the Mediterranean, Indian Ocean, and Pacific from the 1850s until its forced merger into CMA CGM in 1977. The 2004 Monnaie de Paris commemorative series honoring French maritime history drew from a pool of largely forgotten industrial giants — companies that built France's colonial logistics infrastructure but left almost no popular memory.

The .920 fineness is characteristic of French gold coin production of this period, slightly below the more common .900 standard used elsewhere in Europe.
