The Westbahn — the western railway line linking Vienna to Salzburg — was inaugurated in 1858, and Empress Elisabeth was among its earliest prominent passengers, using it repeatedly for her restless travels away from the Viennese court she found suffocating. Austria's silver commemorative program has issued dozens of cultural and historical subjects, but the pairing of Elisabeth with the Westbahn is unusually specific: it ties her to the infrastructure of escape rather than to imperial ceremony.
