Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi was born in Colmar in 1834, and France's decision to honor him in 2004 coincided with the 150th anniversary of nothing in particular — the coin marks the 120th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty's completion, which Bartholdi designed and for which he spent nearly two decades fundraising, lobbying, and personally overseeing construction. The American half of the project was perpetually underfunded; the pedestal nearly killed the entire venture until Joseph Pulitzer shamed donors into contributing through his newspaper.
