| Obverse description | Central field depicts a finely rendered ancient Mediterranean sailing vessel navigating stylized waves, its single mast and billowing sail occupying the majority of the design area, with a flag flying from the bow. Twelve five-pointed stars arranged in an arc along the upper border evoke the European Union emblem. Finland contracted the Italian state mint to produce this issue rather than striking it domestically — a arrangement not unusual for Finnish commemorative gold of the period, as the Helsinki Mint had limited capacity for gold production at the time. The Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato in Rome handled several such contracts for smaller European nations in the early euro era.
