Issued jointly by France and the United Kingdom to mark the centenary of the 1904 Entente Cordiale, this coin was a dual-nation release — the Royal Mint struck a corresponding British version simultaneously, one of the very few instances of France and Britain co-issuing a commemorative in the modern era. The political arrangement it commemorates was itself less a formal alliance than a colonial horse-trade, resolving disputes over Egypt, Morocco, and a dozen other territorial friction points that had kept the two powers antagonistic for most of the nineteenth century.
