The third coin in Austria's six-part Maria Theresa series, this 2017 issue focuses on Justice as one of the cardinal virtues the empress cultivated as a governing principle. Maria Theresa, born May 13, 1717, undertook sweeping judicial reforms across the Habsburg lands — most notably the abolition of torture as an acceptable legal instrument, codified in the Constitutio Criminalis Theresiana of 1768, a genuinely radical position for an 18th-century absolute monarch.
The Austrian Mint has issued this series in both standard and proof finishes, with the proof strikes commanding predictable premiums in secondary markets.
