Reverse description The reverse presents a stylised silhouette of a human head in left profile, its interior filled with a richly detailed assemblage of Åland's flora and fauna: a moose strides centrally, flanked by a bear at lower left, birds in flight above, a fish to the right, aquatic plants, and coniferous foliage at the base, all rendered in high relief against the mirror-polished field. To the right of the head profile, the denomination 20 € is inscribed in large numerals, with the Lithuanian Mint monogram LMK below. The legend SUOMI 2021 FINLAND arcs along the upper border in incuse lettering.

Additional information

Finland granted Åland its autonomous status in 1920 following a League of Nations ruling that settled a bitter dispute between Finland and Sweden — both of whom claimed the archipelago after Russian imperial authority collapsed. The islands remain demilitarized under international treaty to this day, a condition that has held continuously through two world wars and the Cold War.

The centenary of that 1921 autonomy statute is what prompted this issue.
