Issued ahead of the 2006 FIFA World Cup held in Germany, this coin arrived at a moment when Italian football was about to deliver one of its most improbable triumphs — Azzurri lifting the trophy in Berlin despite the tournament nearly unraveling in the group stage. The two-year lead time on commemorative gold issues of this type was standard practice for the Zecca, allowing distribution through banking channels well before the tournament opened.
