| Additional information |
The Spanish Riding School takes its name not from Spain the country but from the Iberian horses — Lipizzaners — imported from the Karst plateau stud farms established under Habsburg rule in the sixteenth century. The institution itself was formalized under Emperor Charles VI, the same ruler who commissioned the Winter Riding School building completed in 1735, still the oldest baroque riding hall in continuous use in the world.
Austria issued this coin under its long-running commemorative program tied to UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage designations; the Riding School received that status in 2015, the direct occasion for this release.
