Samobor's carnival predates Croatian independence by well over a century — the tradition is documented from at least 1827, making it one of the oldest continuously held carnival celebrations in the region. The Croatian National Bank has issued a series of gold coins commemorating Croatian intangible cultural heritage, and the Samobor Carnival was inscribed on Croatia's national list of intangible cultural heritage in 2009, which is the administrative trigger that generally qualifies a tradition for this type of numismatic treatment.
The 3.888 g weight places this squarely in the quarter-ducat equivalent favored by several European mints for small-denomination cultural gold issues.
