| Reverse description | The reverse displays the standard European Union 20 euro cent design by Luc Luycx, featuring a stylised map of Europe to the left with six fine lines representing unity, flanked by a ring of twelve five-pointed stars. The large numeral '20' dominates the right side of the field, with the denomination legend EURO CENT inscribed beneath in two lines. The designer's initials LL appear in small characters near the lower right of the map motif. |

| Additional information |
Issued during the interregnum following the death of John Paul II in April 2005, this coin is one of a small Sede Vacante set authorized by the Camerlengo — Cardinal Eduardo Martínez Somalo — who held administrative authority over Vatican finances during the vacancy. Such issues are produced in limited quantities solely for the duration between pontificates, giving them an intrinsic scarcity tied directly to how quickly a new pope is elected. In 2005, the conclave lasted just two days before Joseph Ratzinger emerged as Benedict XVI.
