Obverse description The obverse bears a left-facing effigy of King Albert II, designed by Jan Alfons Keustermans, set within a circular arrangement of the twelve stars of the European Union. The royal monogram, comprising a capital letter 'A' surmounted by a crown with the Roman numeral 'II' below, is incorporated among the stars in the field. The country abbreviation 'BE' and the year of issue appear as part of the legend flanking the portrait.

Reverse description The reverse, engraved by Luc Luycx, displays the updated map of the European Union extending across the globe, representing the geographic unity of the member states, positioned to the left of the denomination. The face value '20 EURO CENT' is inscribed to the right of the map in bold relief, with the designer's initials 'LL' incorporated into the design. Fine horizontal lines in the background field evoke a cartographic aesthetic consistent with the second map-type reverse series introduced in 2007.
