Austria's millennial year — marking a thousand years from the 996 AD document in which the name "Ostarrichi" first appears in writing — prompted a wave of commemorative issues across multiple denominations. The name surfaces in a deed from Emperor Otto III, a routine land grant that happened to contain the earliest known written record of what would become Österreich.
