Additional information

The "Novas de Alegria" — News of Joy — was one of the inter-island vessels that formed the backbone of transport between Cape Verde's scattered archipelago, where sea routes remained the primary connection between communities long after independence in 1975. Banco de Cabo Verde's decision to place working coastal vessels on circulating coinage rather than historical ships or colonial-era imagery was a deliberate assertion of post-independence identity. KM#42 is a modestly circulated type, encountered worn more often than not.
