Obverse description The national coat of arms of Cape Verde occupies the central field, depicting a torch within a triangle set against three horizontal wavy lines, encircled by the legend REPÚBLICA DE CABO VERDE arranged along the upper arc of an inner ring. Ten five-pointed stars are distributed in a semicircle around the coat of arms. Flanking the lower portion of the arms are two crossed olive branches tied by a broken chain link, symbolising independence. The date 1994 is inscribed to either side of the chain link, with the denomination 20 ESCUDOS prominently rendered in large numerals and lettering in the lower field.
