| Obverse description | The national coat of arms of Liberia occupies the central field, depicting a sailing ship approaching a shoreline, a rising sun, a palm tree, a dove in flight, and a plough, all enclosed within a wreath of leaves and surmounted by a scroll bearing the national motto THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE. The outer legend REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA arcs along the upper periphery, with the date 1997 divided across the lower field flanking the arms.
