Reverse description A three-quarter facing bust of Ulysses S. Grant, Union Army General and 18th President of the United States, is rendered in high relief at the centre of the field. Grant is depicted in civilian dress with a bow tie and full beard. Behind the bust, a stylised background features diagonal line engraving and a partial representation of the American Stars and Stripes flag with stars visible in the upper left field. The curved legend CIVIL WAR · ULYSSES S. GRANT · 1822–1885 arcs along the upper periphery, referencing his birth and death years. The denomination $20 appears in the lower exergue.
