Casino scrip of this type occupied a legal grey area in New Jersey gaming regulations — issued for internal promotional use, not redeemable for cash, and technically exempt from the state's standard chip accountability requirements. The Taj Mahal opened in April 1990 with considerable fanfare and almost immediately ran into debt service problems serious enough to force a bankruptcy filing within months of opening.
Whether this scrip ever saw meaningful floor use before those disruptions is an open question.
