Casino scrip of this type occupied a genuinely odd legal position. Atlantic City gaming establishments issued dollar-denominated paper instruments redeemable only within the property, which kept the transaction loop closed and discouraged players from walking out mid-session. The Showboat was unusual among Atlantic City casinos in operating a full bowling alley as part of its complex — a deliberate pitch at a different demographic than the Boardwalk high-roller properties.
Whether this scrip saw heavy table use or was retained as a novelty is the real question. Heavily circulated examples show corner wear from chip-rack handling, not wallet folds.
