Additional information

Palau has operated a prolific commemorative program since the 1990s, striking coins almost exclusively for the collector market under licensing arrangements that have little to do with the island nation's actual monetary system — the country uses the US dollar for everyday commerce. The KM#844 designation places this squarely within that output.

The "Reiwa" reference marks the Japanese imperial era that began May 1, 2019, when Emperor Naruhito ascended following Akihito's abdication — the first voluntary abdication in over two centuries. Palau's geographical and economic proximity to Japan made it a natural, if opportunistic, issuer for commemoratives targeting that market.
