Liberia issued a wave of foreign-celebrity commemoratives throughout the 1990s, largely aimed at the international collector market rather than domestic circulation. This piece was struck in 1997, the year Diana died in Paris, making it one of dozens of near-simultaneous memorial issues from small-nation mints competing for the same grief-driven demand. Liberia had no meaningful connection to the subject — the series exists purely as a revenue mechanism.
