Liberia's commemorative coinage program in the 1990s was frankly opportunistic — the government licensed its minting authority extensively to foreign private minting companies, producing collectors' pieces with no domestic circulation intent whatsoever. This piece, issued in 1997 following Diana's death in August of that year, was part of a wave of memorial issues from non-Commonwealth nations rushing product to market within weeks of the Paris crash.
KM#526 is one of several distinct Diana types Liberia issued that year under different subtitles, all produced through the same licensed arrangement.
