Additional information

Martha Washington appeared on U.S. currency exactly once in official federal issue — the 1886 and 1891 Silver Certificate series — making her one of the very few women to hold that distinction in American history. Liberia's extensive commemorative program of the late 1990s and early 2000s exploited that cultural resonance aggressively, producing dozens of portrait coins tied to American historical figures for a collector market that had essentially no connection to Liberia itself.

The Central Bank issued these almost entirely for export to Western hobby dealers.
