| Obverse description | The national coat of arms of Liberia is depicted centrally, featuring a sailing ship on the sea, a plow and shovel in the foreground, a palm tree, and a rising sun, all within a shield supported by scroll-work. A ribbon across the upper portion of the shield bears the national motto THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE, and a scroll at the base reads REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA. The date 1997 is divided across the field on either side of the shield, and the denomination $20 DOLLARS appears in the lower legend. The outer legend REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA curves along the upper periphery, and the entire design is enclosed within a beaded border. |
