Obverse description The national coat of arms of Liberia is centrally displayed, featuring a sailing ship on the sea, a palm tree, a rising sun, a dove, a plough, and a shovel, all within a shield surmounted by a ribbon bearing the motto THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE. The shield is flanked by laurel branches and supported by a scroll inscribed REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA. The issue date 2000 is divided to the left and right of the arms, the legend REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA arcs around the upper field, and the denomination 20 DOLLARS appears in the lower field.

Reverse description A front-facing draped bust portrait of John Adams, 2nd President of the United States, dominates the central field, rendered in high relief with period-appropriate attire including a cravat and coat. The arc legend II U.S. PRESIDENT · JOHN ADAMS curves around the upper periphery. The dates of his presidency, 1797 and 1801, flank the portrait in the lower field, and the denomination $20 is inscribed along the bottom rim.
