Additional information

Longstreet is an unusual choice for a Liberian commemorative — he was a Confederate general, later redeemed somewhat in Northern opinion by his post-war support for Reconstruction and his service under Grant as U.S. Marshal for Georgia. Liberia had no meaningful historical connection to him. These Pacific island and West African nation commemoratives from the late 1990s and early 2000s were largely conceived and marketed by European coin dealers and distributors, with the issuing government receiving a licensing fee while the real commercial operation ran elsewhere.
