Obverse description The obverse bears the final commemorative effigy of Queen Elizabeth II as depicted at 77 years of age, bare-headed, wearing a necklace and earrings, facing right, engraved by Susan Taylor. Flanking the portrait are the commemorative dual dates '1952' and '2022,' separated by four pearls symbolising the four royal effigies that appeared on Canadian coinage throughout her reign. The legend ELIZABETH II and the denomination 20 DOLLARS appear in the field alongside the inscription DG REGINA, abbreviated from the Latin Dei Gratia Regina, meaning 'Queen by the Grace of God.' The designer's initials SB appear in the field. The composition of the legend and the commemorative double-date device give the obverse a distinctly memorial character, marking the conclusion of Elizabeth II's 70-year reign.
