| Reverse description | The reverse presents a dramatic high-relief scene commemorating the Hindenburg airship disaster of May 6, 1937. The elongated hull of the LZ 129 Hindenburg is depicted in profile at left, tethered to its mooring mast at Lakehurst Naval Air Station, with ground crew visible below. From the stern and upper sections of the airship erupts a massive billowing fireball rendered in deeply sculpted relief, evoking the catastrophic hydrogen fire. The curved legend HISTORY OF AMERICA • HINDENBURG DISASTER 1937 arcs around the upper and right periphery of the field. The face value $20 appears in the lower exergue. |
