| Obverse description | The national coat of arms of Liberia occupies the central field, depicting a sailing ship approaching the shore beneath a rising sun, flanked by a palm tree, with a dove in flight above and a plough and scroll at the base. The shield is surmounted by the national motto on a ribbon reading THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE, and enclosed within a wreath of leaves. The outer legend REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA arcs along the upper periphery, with a second inscription REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA appearing on a scroll within the arms. The date 2000 is divided across the lower field on either side of the shield, and the denomination 20 DOLLARS is inscribed along the lower rim. |

| Reverse description | A highly detailed relief portrayal of the SS Great Eastern, Isambard Kingdom Brunel's celebrated iron steamship, is depicted underway on a choppy sea rendered with finely engraved waves occupying the lower half of the field. The vessel is shown in three-quarter starboard view, its multiple masts and furled sails clearly delineated alongside the characteristic paddle-wheel housing amidships. Clouds are lightly suggested in the upper field. The legend GREAT EASTERN arcs along the upper periphery in bold raised lettering, while the denomination $20 is inscribed at the base of the coin. |
