Obverse description The national coat of arms of Liberia occupies the central field, depicting a sailing ship approaching the shore beneath a rising sun, flanked by a palm tree, with a dove in flight above and a plough and scroll at the base. The shield is surmounted by the national motto on a ribbon reading THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE, and enclosed within a wreath of leaves. The outer legend REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA arcs along the upper periphery, with a second inscription REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA appearing on a scroll within the arms. The date 2000 is divided across the lower field on either side of the shield, and the denomination 20 DOLLARS is inscribed along the lower rim.

Reverse description A highly detailed relief portrayal of the SS Great Eastern, Isambard Kingdom Brunel's celebrated iron steamship, is depicted underway on a choppy sea rendered with finely engraved waves occupying the lower half of the field. The vessel is shown in three-quarter starboard view, its multiple masts and furled sails clearly delineated alongside the characteristic paddle-wheel housing amidships. Clouds are lightly suggested in the upper field. The legend GREAT EASTERN arcs along the upper periphery in bold raised lettering, while the denomination $20 is inscribed at the base of the coin.
