Fujitsu's ICL Systems division produced test notes like this one for calibrating and validating automated currency handling equipment — bill validators, ATMs, sorters. They are not banknotes in any legal sense, but they circulate freely among collectors precisely because they had to mimic real notes closely enough to fool machines. The La Jolla facility was an ICL engineering center focused on optical and magnetic recognition systems for the US market.

Surviving examples vary considerably in condition depending on how hard the test equipment ran them.
