The Toronto Maple Leafs franchise actually predates its own name — the club played as the Toronto St. Patricks until Conn Smythe's ownership group purchased it in February 1927 and rebranded immediately. The centenary being marked here counts from the 1917 founding of the NHL itself, in which the Toronto Arenas were a charter member, making the lineage technically continuous through three franchise names.
