Additional information

The Tainui were among the great waka hourua — double-hulled voyaging canoes — that Māori oral tradition credits with the original settlement of New Zealand, arriving at Kāwhia Harbour on the west coast of the North Island. Cook Islands silver commemoratives of this period were produced largely for the collector market through the Franklin Mint and similar distributors, with limited genuine circulation on the islands themselves. The Tainui canoe holds particular political resonance: the iwi of the same name signed a landmark Treaty settlement with the New Zealand Crown in May 1995, the same year this coin was issued.
