This piece belongs to the RCM's broader push into ultra-high-relief bullion collectibles that accelerated after 2012, when the mint invested heavily in new laser-etching and multi-die striking technology to compete with Perth and the U.S. Mint in the premium collector market. The .9999 fineness — four nines rather than the more common .999 — was a deliberate marketing differentiator the RCM had been using since its 1998 Maple Leaf upgrades.

Mintage on issues from this series was tightly capped, typically in the low thousands.
