Additional information

The Red River Métis are a distinct Indigenous people whose homeland centered on the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers in present-day Manitoba — not simply a mixed-heritage population, but a nation with its own governance, language (Michif), and land rights that remained legally contested in Canadian courts well into the 21st century. The Manitoba Métis Federation v. Canada Supreme Court decision came only in 2013, over 140 years after the Métis provisional government negotiated the terms of Manitoba's entry into Confederation.
