| Obverse description | The obverse features the fourth definitive effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Susanna Blunt, depicted in right-facing profile with a diademed coiffure, pearl earring, and pearl necklace. The engraver's initials 'SB' appear at the truncation of the bust. The legend 'ELIZABETH II' arcs along the left rim, while 'D·G·REGINA' arcs along the right rim. The date '2017' appears above the effigy and the denomination '20 DOLLARS' is inscribed along the lower rim, all set against a highly polished mirror field. |

Part of the RCM's long-running "Jewel of the Rain" series exploiting selective electroplating and high-relief techniques developed in-house during the 2010s, this issue uses a proprietary crystal application process the Mint has never fully disclosed in technical literature. Canada's sugar maple carries genuine economic weight beyond the symbolic — the maple syrup industry generates over a billion dollars annually, largely concentrated in Quebec — but that context is incidental to why this coin exists. It was made because ultra-high-relief .9999 fine silver with applied crystals sells reliably to the collector market at significant premiums over spot.
