Reverse description The reverse presents a richly detailed Arctic and polar exploration composition. At left, a bearded Elizabethan-era explorer wearing a ruff collar — evocative of early Arctic voyagers such as Martin Frobisher — faces the viewer in three-quarter portrait. Behind him radiates a large eight-pointed compass rose with a clock or compass instrument at its centre, symbolising scientific navigation and the International Polar Year. To the upper right, a period sailing vessel navigates icy waters beneath a stylised iceberg or glacier. In the middle ground, an Inuit figure paddles a kayak, while a polar bear walks in the foreground. The legend CANADA arcs along the upper rim, with the denomination 20 DOLLARS along the lower rim, the date 2007 at lower right, and the engraver's initials LM at lower left of the field.
