Schiller died in 1805, but his image gained a second life on commemorative currency partly because of how thoroughly he was claimed by competing political projects — Weimar Germany lionized him, East Germany put him on the 10-Mark note, and reunified Germany kept him on the 10 Deutsche Mark through 1997. Cook Islands' 1996 issue appeared at the tail end of that continental obsession. At 1.24 grams, this is a fractional gold piece almost certainly aimed squarely at the collector market rather than any plausible circulation role.
