The train ferry was a distinctly Canadian solution to a distinctly Canadian problem: vast distances, frozen waterways, and rail lines that needed to cross them. Prince Edward Island relied on ice-breaking train ferries to maintain its rail connection to the mainland until the last PEI freight service wound down in 1989, decades before the Confederation Bridge made the route moot entirely.
This coin is part of the Royal Canadian Mint's broader "Canadian Passages" series, which documented modes of transport integral to the country's physical and economic integration. The .9999 fine silver specification — purer than the traditional sterling standard — has been the Mint's benchmark for collector silver since the 1990s.
