| Obverse description | The obverse features the fourth definitive effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, sculpted by Dora de Pédery-Hunt, rendered in right-facing profile with the Queen wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, drop earrings, and a pearl necklace. The effigy is set against a deeply mirrored proof field with a frosted relief finish. The legend ELIZABETH II arcs along the upper left rim, while D·G·REGINA continues along the upper right, both in raised Latin lettering. The date 2003 appears in the lower field, flanked by raised dots. The overall composition reflects the regal, classical portraiture style characteristic of Canadian commemorative coinage of this period. |

| Reverse description | The reverse depicts the Canadian National Railway FA-1 diesel-electric locomotive in dynamic three-quarter perspective, rendered with selective gold electroplating that highlights the locomotive and passenger cars against a finely detailed landscape of rocky terrain and vegetation. A small inset oval vignette at the upper portion of the field presents a top-view schematic silhouette of the locomotive for technical reference. The train is shown travelling along tracks with meticulous engraving of mechanical detail on the locomotive body. The engraver's initials JM appear in the lower left field. The legend CANADA 20 DOLLARS is inscribed in bold raised lettering along the lower rim. |
