Obverse description The obverse bears the right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II as executed by engraver Susan Taylor, depicting the monarch at 77 years of age with bare head, wearing a necklace and earrings. The portrait is rendered in high relief against a polished field, consistent with the Royal Canadian Mint's proof-quality finishing. The legend ELIZABETH II D·G·REGINA encircles the effigy, affirming her title by the grace of God. The design follows the fourth definitive effigy portrait tradition used on Canadian coinage from 1990 onward.

Reverse description The reverse features a highly stylized, gem-set honeybee rendered in exquisite detail at the center of the field, embellished with inset black sapphire, citrine, and white topaz gemstones, with selective rhodium and gold plating accentuating its body and wings. The naturalistic background is engraved with flowing tulip vines and curly pea vines, creating an intricate botanical tapestry framing the central motif. The designer's initials JV appear within the reverse field. The peripheral legend bears the date 2017, the country name CANADA, and the denomination 20 DOLLARS. The overall composition exemplifies the Royal Canadian Mint's mastery of gem-inlay and selective plating techniques on fine silver coinage.
