The Avro CF-105 Arrow was cancelled by the Diefenbaker government on February 20, 1959 — a date still referred to in Canadian aviation circles simply as "Black Friday." The program's termination was so abrupt and politically charged that the completed airframes, tooling, and technical drawings were ordered destroyed, leaving almost nothing intact. The obsessive thoroughness of that destruction is precisely why the Arrow retains such outsized cultural weight in Canada decades later.
The Royal Canadian Mint has returned to the Arrow subject repeatedly in its numismatic program, this 2021 issue being among several silver commemoratives in the series.
