Obverse description The national coat of arms of Liberia is centrally depicted, featuring a shield bearing a sailing ship at sea, a palm tree, and a rising sun, with a dove in flight above and a plow and shovel in the foreground. A scrolled ribbon across the shield bears the national motto 'THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE'. The shield is flanked by laurel branches. The date '2004' is divided by the coat of arms in the lower field. The outer legend 'REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA' appears at the top, with 'REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA' repeated along the bottom, all within a beaded border.

Additional information

Gago Coutinho was the Portuguese naval officer and navigator who, alongside Sacadura Cabral, completed the first aerial crossing of the South Atlantic in 1922 — a feat that required Coutinho's own invention, a modified sextant adapted for use in aircraft. Liberia's commemorative program in the early 2000s issued dozens of silver pieces honoring aviators and explorers with no direct connection to the country, a commercially driven series aimed squarely at the collector market rather than circulation.
